"A small space where big things happen."
Common Ground Theatre offers and hosts classes for the community. We are always looking for class ideas and qualified teachers of performing arts-related topics. For any questions or to submit a resume, please contact Devra Thomas, Executive Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A well-grounded class in the art of improvisational acting. It’s not a class about telling jokes or being clever. No one can teach you to be funny. But you can learn to trust your impulses, allow spontaneity, and create cooperatively.
Our approach is rooted in honest responses to behavior, and attention is continually directed onto the human being you’re working with rather than on going into your head for ideas. Students move beyond the basics into more traditional improvised scene work, although that work is deeper and more truthful than what you’ll see on most improv stages.
The class is suitable for folks with improv experience as well as beginners.
The class is also appropriate for artists of other disciplines, and even non-performers (such as writers) or anyone who has the desire to have some fun, break out of a rut and acquire some useful skills.
Taught by J Chachula from Open Mind Improv. J Chachula co-founded The Flying Machine Theatre with Marta King in 1999 and is a professional teacher, actor, and director. He is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and received his Meisner training from Andy Rohrer and Larry Silverberg. He studied improvisation with The Transactors Improv Company and spent two years touring with the group. He performs with the improv group Third Date.
April 2-May 21, every Thursday at 9:30a.m.-12:30p.m.

We all know that improvising is big fun, but every so often we have a scene where things just felt off.“Were we trying too hard to find a game?” “Was my character inconsistent?” “Did I not bring enough energy?”
In this workshop we’ll have fun with some exercises to loosen us up and then work on some tools to help us find our way to enjoyable and successful scenes. We’ll focus on object work, strong initiations, playing it “straight”, and recognizing your groove.
This workshop is for improvisors of all skill levels and experience. Feel free to contact the instructor with any questions.
Bart Hubbard stumbled into an improv class at the suggestion of a wise friend in 2010. Since then he can’t get enough and has steadily taken classes, taught, and performed and eventually joined Transactors Improv Co. in March, 2013. His day job is running a web consulting business, but for fun he enjoys drinking local beer and giving himself compliments.
Saturday, June 6th from 12:00-4:00p.m.

Why so cheap? We don’t have the same overhead as a studio and can charge quite a bit less per session because of this. We also don’t offer some of the amenities of a studio- practitioners must bring their own mats and props. But beyond that we believe yoga is a necessity, not a luxury.
